We’re Changing Our Name After being called Chevron Valley Credit Union for almost 20 years, we’re making a change. Following a request by ChevronTexaco Corporation that we cease using their old trademark name “Chevron,” the credit union’s Board of Directors agreed to a name change. Alternative names are now under review, and will require the approval of government regulators.
“This change in name in no way diminishes our commitment to the thousands of current and former employees of the ChevronTexaco Corporation we serve,” said Vernon Powers, Chairman of the Board. “Over the years, we have broadened our membership requirements, and we can now serve all residents of Kern County. So, the energy company’s request may actually have come at a good time.”
The credit union continues to lease space in ChevronTexaco Corporation’s Bakersfield offices at 9559 Camino Media and expects to continue all of our existing relationships with ChevronTexaco.
Although we need to choose a new name, we want to maintain our historic connection with and service to the petroleum industry in Kern County. Our roots go very deep here,” noted Neil Sawyer, the credit union’s President & CEO. “The credit union was started in 1935 by employees of the Standard Oil Company, one of the predecessors of the ChevronTexaco Corporation. No matter what we’re called, we plan to be around to serve the industry that gave us our start,” Sawyer added.
Following a number of down-sizings in Kern County’s oil company employment, the credit union began to expand membership eligibility over the years. Since 2001, the credit union has been authorized by the State of California to serve anyone who lives or works in Kern County.
